Botox® & Fillers Q & A

What is Botox®?

Since 2002, Botox® has been FDA-approved for cosmetic purposes to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes.

When injected in your skin, Botox® temporarily paralyzes the small muscles under your skin that pull your skin into facial expressions. While this sounds scary, it’s perfectly safe, and millions of people have Botox® injections every year. When your facial muscles are still, the skin covering them also relaxes, releasing wrinkles and folds.

What causes wrinkles?

Elastin and collagen are two skin fibers that help your skin stay plump and supple, and spring back to smoothness after you smile or frown. However, as you age, your production of the skin fiber slows, and as the amount decreases, your skin is less able to spring back and instead stays in the folds your facial expressions create.

What’s the difference between Botox® and dermal fillers?

Botox® and dermal fillers both reduce the appearance of wrinkles but do so in very different ways. While Botox® temporarily relaxes your skin and is approved to treat the “11” lines between your eyebrows, forehead lines, and crow’s feet, dermal fillers are a hyaluronic acid gel injection that fills in your wrinkles and areas of your skin where you’ve lost volume and contouring, such as your lips or cheeks.

Dermal fillers last up to 18 months, depending on your lifestyle and how quickly your body absorbs the gel. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in your skin, and these products are FDA approved.

Your body metabolizes Botox® more quickly than dermal fillers. Everyone is different, and you may need touch-up appointments every 3-6 months to maintain your appearance.

Who is a good candidate for Botox® or dermal fillers?

Anyone over the age of 18 who is concerned about signs of aging, in good general health, and doesn't have allergies to any of the ingredients of Botox® or dermal fillers can have cosmetic injections. Botox® and dermal fillers are suitable for every skin type and tone.

You can have cosmetic injections to reduce the signs of visible wrinkles and volume loss, or you could start the injections before your skin show signs of aging. Many people in their 20s have Botox® injections for preventive purposes.
